Real Madrid begins journey to football life without Cristiano Ronaldo as they succumbed to 4-2 defeat at the hands of rival Atletico Madrid in UEFA Super Cup.
Los Blancos had enjoyed a string of successes in their last three Super Cup in which Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence was a major factor. Atletico Madrid had followed up their Europa Cup success last season with the Super Cup title.
Atletico got to a flying start after Diego Costa put them ahead with a stunning goal in the first minute, but Benzema leveled the scores with a fine header from a tantalizing cross from Bale just minutes before half time.
Sergio Ramos converted from the penalty spot to put Real Madrid in front in the 63rd minute but Diego Costa scored again with ten minutes left on the regulation time which forced the game to extra time. Las Rojas claimed victory with a quickfire double from Saul and Koke in the first half of extra time.
Although, Real Madrid seem impressive and in control of the game but were definitely missing Cristiano Ronaldo’s killer instinct which had helped them to success in the past years. It was earlier reported that the outcome of this match will determine if Real Madrid will still need to pursue Hazard’s transfer before the transfer market closes, and we may expect some moves in the coming week
