The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Warri branch have asked for a full-scale investigation into the alleged assault of a lawyer, Bernard Oyabevwe.

This was done at the Warri Magistrate Court last week. The legal body is demanding the removal of the Delta Commissioner of police and the Warri Area Commander, Muhammad Mustapha and Mohammed Shaba respectively.

The NBA Chairman in a press conference at the NBA warri branch, Godwin Ebowe, the Branch chairman said their member was attacked June 6 by the police and there is a video to confirm it.

He also stated that the current wave of police brutality on civilians had become a source of concern; he called for the invocation of the relevant provisions in the constitution to put an end to the acts.

Speaking further, he said the chairman said the NBA member was brutalised and drag on the floor, and when the Warri Area Commander was contacted, he said he was acting on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police.

According to the Victim Bernard Oyabevwe, he said one of his clients, Nosa Igiehon was taken by the officials of the EFCC while standing a trial at Warri magistrate Court 2, he said the client was dragged to the A Division near the court, and while he was demanding for an explanation, a police man pushed him to collide with an oncoming car.

He said that he asked why he was pushed and the policeman said he should get out from there, and go to file his motion. The victim said while he was going, the police man seized his gown and dragged him, while he was trying to release himself, others came to taunt him and beat him, he even said one hit him hard on his head with a gun and blood came out.

Replying to the incident, the Police Public relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Command, Andrew Aniamaka, blamed the lawyer for the incident and said the matter has been charged to court over conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and serious assault.
