Mourinho puled one of the transfer surprises last summer after sanctioning a deal to sign former player at Chelsea, Nemanja Matic at a whooping £34m for a 29 year-old midfielder. Mourinho needed to bring in a holding midfielder to free Pogba attacking swags. So far, it had worked well for the French man who had already bagged 3 goals and created 5 more despite not having enough games due to injury and recently, suspension.
Man United have been linked with a move for another Chelsea player, Willian who worked under Mourinho during his time at Stamford Bridge. Willian was close to joining Man United last summer but the deal was refuted by Conte who claimed the player was still indispensable for the team. Apart from Willian, Man United have also been frequently linked with a move for Real Madrid’s defender, Raphael Varane. The player was one of the key member during Mourinho’s reign at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mourinho kept looking to restructure the Man United squad and feel gunning for former players will solve his problems at United. Man United was known to go for rival’s best players and not the ones that are subject to requirements. Matic was almost frozen out by Bakayoko’s arrival and the need to play regular football made him seek for a switch to Man United. Willian is not all that important for Chelsea, although may not be seen that way, but he is definitely not fans favourite.
There are lots of talented young players out there that could be part of a formidable restructuring at Old Trafford. It is understood that there is need for instant success, especially after the money he spent during the summer. Conte added players to Chelsea’s existing squad and was able to identify which area needed to be bolstered. He brought in Alonso last season and the player was instrumental to their winning of the league.
Mourinho needs to understand and be able to identify which area needs strengthening and buy relevant players and not the ones he loved in his past clubs
