Jussie Smollett facing Jail Time for Filing False Police Report
Empire star Jussie Smollet has been charged with federal disorderly conduct by the Chicago Police for filing a false report about an alleged homophobic attack.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the charge is a class 4 felony and could potentially lead to the actor/singer bagging up to 3 years in prison and $25,000 in fines. FOX and 20th Century Fox Television declined to comment on the new development but Smollett’s lawyers said in a statement:
Like any other citizen, Mr Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked. Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense.
Smollet originally claimed to have been attacked by two men outside a Chicago restaurant who yelled homophobic slurs at him, punched him, poured bleach on him while also slinging a noose around his neck. In the weeks following the report, Chicago Police arrested two brothers of Nigerian descent and although they were later released, the police said their confessions changed the trajectory of the investigation.
