#NigeriaDecides: INEC faces Mass Resignation of RECs, National Commissioners
Following the announcement of the results of Saturday’s General Elections for the Presidential Seat and National Assembly seats, some Resident Electoral Commissioners & National Commissioners serving under the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have indicated their willingness to resign from their posts.
According to a new report by Vanguard, this is a result of alleged harassment, intimidation and threat to life by security agencies during the election process.
The RECs and National Commissioners claimed that at the height of the threat to their lives, they looked up to the INEC boss, Yakubu Mahmood but he was also under huge attack and intense pressure from high profile individuals.
As a source told Vanguard;
“If there is no intervention, many of the RECs and national commissioners are contemplating the option of resignation because what they passed through in the hands of security agencies, they have not witnessed it before.
“We have not seen this kind of thing before and all through the preparations. Some of the RECs were held, hostage.”
