ASUU suspend 3-Month Old Strike Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have suspended the strike action which was embarked on 3 months ago, following a conciliatory meeting held at the instance of the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige and the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu. The truce was reached just a few hours after the National Union of Students (NANS) threatened shutdown against the members of ASUU present at the negotiation. ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi stated that the reason for the strike in the first place was to “stem the continued slide into rot and decay in public universities since the 1980s.” The Union also stated categorically that the strike was only “suspended” and would resume if the government should renege on the Memorandum of Action signed by both parties.]]>
