Gladly, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be participating in the upcoming World Cup competition in Russia, making it their 6th in history. It has been a memorable journey so far for the Super Eagles. Unlike the previous Eagles teams that had participated in the past, this year’s team will be the most unpopular with just few big names making the final squad – Super Eagles World Cup Guide

Nigeria fans always create a party atmosphere

However, Super Eagles of Nigeria have become a prominent name among top European and South American football teams. Their remarkable victories over top countries such as Bulgaria, Spain, Brazil, Argentina etc in FIFA competitions have made them a force to reckon with.

Super Eagles are one of the underdogs in the forthcoming competition and as usual they will be out to make a statement by providing some shocks.

Below are some of the facts you need to know about the Super Eagles participation at the World Cup:

  • Participation: Nigeria has previously participated in 5 World Cup competitions, the last being in Brazil 2014
  • Progress: The furthest the Super Eagles had reached in World Cup is the Round of 16
  • Goals: Rashidi Yekini was the first player to score for Super Eagles in USA 94. The last goal was scored by Ahmed Musa in 2-3 loss to Argentina in the group stage fixture in Russia 2014
  • Stats: Nigeria has played a total 18 games, won 5, drawn 3, lost 10, scored 20 and conceded 26

The journey so far has not been fantastic but rather encouraging. Nigeria currently ranked 47 in FIFA ranking are grouped alongside teams that have better ranking (Croatia 18th, Iceland 22nd and Argentina 5th). It would be beneficial to Super Eagles to qualify from the group. While the World Cup title is the ultimate goal, the primary motive for most African countries is to become the first to reach at least the Semi Final.

The Squad

The provisional squad led by Mikel Obi is composed of few known foreign based players such as Victor Moses, Iheanacho, Iwobi, Onazi, Ndidi, Ahmed Musa etc. Squad to be trimmed down by 23rd, the players mentioned above are expected to make the final list. The past friendlies have shown some signs of promise from the Super Eagles, but they will need utmost concentration and drive to win if they are to go far in the competition

The Coach

The debate over foreign and indigenous coach seem to have  reached a final consensus with Grenot Rohr in charge to take the Super Eagles to Russia. Rohr early days with the Super Eagles looks promising, having guided the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.

Super Eagles Chances – Super Eagles World Cup Guide

Considering the FIFA ranking, the Group C oppositions for the Super Eagles are tricky fixtures with Argentina being wrongly touted to be the only threat in the group. Super Eagles are likely to proceed from the group stage if they get serious from the first game against Croatia. The Round of 16 opposition will determine their progress.
