Chairman, House ad hoc Committee on curbing excessive electricity charges, Isreal Ajibola have said yesterday that the House of Representatives will soon take action against the excessive billing of electricity consumers. This was exposed at the interactive session organised by Kano/Kaduna Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
He mentioned that the house has received so many allegations of excessive billing and Disco’s refusal to provide meter to people. He said the committee got to know about all the allegations and complains after a fact-finding mission that it did across the six geo-political zones to be sure of the authenticity of the allegations.
Isreal Ajibola said the report the committee gives will determine the outcome of the bill sponsored by the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila. The bill is seeking to criminalise estimated billing system as presently being operated by the distribution.
Also during the session, Yunusa Murtala, a stakeholder lamented the excessive bill of the PHCN and also accused Kano Electricity company (KEDCO) of supplying faulty meters to consumers. Abubakar Dongora also complained about the tariff by Kedco in rural committee.
Replying to this, Chief Operations Officer state. of Kedco, Raul Sing, said Kedco has distributed over 70,000 prepaid meters to consumers in Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa state and they also operate within the regulatory limit.
