The Senate today during their plenary at Abuja today have demanded that INEC declares June 12, 1993, presidential elections result.
This is a fall out of the announcement of President Buhari on Wednesday, about conferring the highest honour in Nigeria on the late Abiola, Presidential aspirate of SDP during the 1993 elections.
The president had explained that June 12 was more symbolic than May 29, henceforth the democracy day will be on June 12.
Speaking about this development, Senator Lanre Tejuoso told his colleagues that what the President did is commendable, it shows the spirit of reconciliation, he said.
The lawmaker also urged the house and the executive arm of the government to reconcile their grievances, in the face of the recent faceoff between both arms of government.
Also speaking, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu noted that the constitution needs to be amended if June 12 will be declared as Democracy day.
Speaking on this, The Senate President said that he supports the development because MKO Abiola did a lot for the nation but his family have not been given the kind of recognition they deserve, he directed the federal government to pay all the entitlements due to Abiola’s family as President and that of Professor Baba Gana Kingibe, his running mate as vice president.
Making a conclusion on this, the house agreed that June 12 will a national public holiday henceforth but May 29 will remain the day for the inauguration of newly elected officers.
