Ronaldo joined Messi in the list of stars that are out of the World cup after Cavani scored a brace in Portugal’s 1-2 loss to Uruguay in the Round of 16 match. Ronaldo was frustrated as he couldn’t help his team overcome a determined South American side inspired by two of the top strikers in the world, Suarez and Cavani.
The Uruguayan pair combined well as Suarez set up Cavani who headed past Portuguese goalkeeper to send Uruguay to an ecstatic early lead which was maintained throughout the first half. The second half brought more drama as Cavani’s second cancelled out Portugal equalizer through Pepe in the space of seven minute. Since then, Portugal failed to break down the Uruguayan tight defence which gave Ronaldo no room to fire his trademark shot from outside the box.
The loss means Ronaldo had joined his rival Messi who earlier crashed out with Argentina in a 4-3 loss to France earlier in the day, in the list of great players failing to win the World Cup. The competition in Russia is touted to be the final outing for both but it woud be interesting to see what decision will be made by both in coming days.
